Xerox survey reveals top 10 environmental pet peeves

NORWALK, Conn., April 17, 2008 – Do you consider yourself environmentally aware? Are you the Chief Recycling Officer of your household? What about at work?

Results of a North American survey released today by Xerox Corporation to measure environmental consciousness in the workplace, found that work colleagues may have some strong objections to those who don’t walk-the-green-talk at the office.

Almost 40 percent of U.S. respondents said their number one office environmental pet peeve was mindless printing resulting in abandoned pages at the printer, followed closely by leaving the lights on in unused offices (37 percent).

A review of the other top office pet peeves included: lack of recycling bins (33 percent); excessive air conditioning or heating (29 percent); excessive use of paper products – like plates and cups (27 percent); coworkers who don’t recycle (27 percent) and coworkers who print single-sided instead of double-sided documents (24 percent).

“As we talk with our customers, we often find that environmental consciousness is left in the recycling bin that sits in employees’ garages. While they’re eco-friendly at home, the office is still breeding ground for bad habits,” said Patricia A. Calkins, vice president of Environment, Health and Safety at Xerox. “Yet, as this survey found, it takes a few small steps to make a big difference. Step number one: use the technology available in the office to cut back on paper use, reduce waste and reduce energy consumption. That can mean simply setting the office printers to default to two-sided printing, which cuts office paper use in half. Or, replace single function printers and copiers with multifunction systems, decreasing energy use.”

Gender and generations
The survey, which polled 1,569 office workers across the U.S. and Canada, revealed that U.S. women (91 percent) consider themselves more eco-conscious than their male counterparts (86 percent). Age had a noticeable effect on environmental consciousness too. Of U.S. workers aged 18-34, 27 percent ranked themselves as “extremely” or “very green” versus the next generation of employees aged 35-44 (17 percent).

9. Having to store paper copies of existing, electronic files (24%)
10. Leaving computer on and not powering down when going home (23%)

About the survey
Harris Interactive conducted the survey of 1,569 adults aged 18+ working in offices in Canada and the United States from March 4 – March 9, 2008 on behalf of Xerox Corporation. Respondents were asked to rate their environmental consciousness and select which common office practices with negative environmental impact bothered them. The U.S. data were collected online and were weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, annual household income, race/ethnicity and propensity to be online.

We reached a new record for number of green printing inquiries through the website in March. The interest in recycled papers and soy inks just keeps growing. With all the attention the environment and global warming are getting in the news, it’s no wonder folks are looking for any possible way to reduce their carbon footprint at home and at work.

There are many simple things you can do to help, such as using the back side of printouts in your fax machine or cutting them up for note paper to use by the phone. Capital City Classic to be run for Earth Day

The Capital City Classic is running it’s inaugural 10k event this Saturday in downtown Raleigh. Organizer Keith Mathis hired our favorite branding company to create a logo along with brochures and posters for the event, and The Splinter Group came through once again with an awesome illustration and identity system for the event. The posters were eco-friendly, printed on our house gloss paper, and the brochures were printed on 100% pcw recycled uncoated paper, processed chlorine-free. We also produced the banners and sponsor graphics for the start/finish line, located directly in front of ABC-11 Studios on Fayetteville Street Mall.

It’s a family event, fun for runners and spectators alike. Raleigh has scheduled Earth Day acivities for Saturday on the mall, and the weather promises to be beautiful, so what better way to celebrate Earth Day than to spend it outdoors? Eco-friendly wedding announcements

We have had so much interest in green printing for weddings that we have decided to devote a section on the website to eco-friendly wedding invitation packages. This section will include pricing for several options of standard wedding announcements and envelopes using high post-consumer waste content recycled papers and soy inks, as well as letterpress invitation options. Our new account manager, Jennifer Brauer, is managing the project, and plans to include links to eco-friendly resources for other aspects of wedding planning, such as catering and flowers. This feature should go live soon, but in the meantime please contact Jennifer for a custom quote.

What happens to recycled vinyl banners?

As we previously reported, Raleigh’s green printer is a collection site for old vinyl banners. But what becomes of them once we deliver them to Whole Foods for recycling? Inquiring minds want to know, so we talked with Carrie LeChevallier to find out what the latest use for them is. Turns out, Carrie has partnered with a local craftsperson to have them made into outdoor pillows!

The vinyl is nearly weatherproof and highly water resistant, so it makes a great fabric for outdoor cushions and pillows. The filling is a natural water-resistant material from Central America called “Kapok.” The plan is for the pillows to be available for ordering online and will range in price from approximately $50-$125, depending on size. Barefoot Press will keep you posted here when the site is up and running.
